Angad Hundal

This award is established in the memory of our son, Angad Hundal, a kind and caring young man who lost his life in an unfortunate accident. Angad was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India on September 22, 1995 to Simardeep Hundal and Jagdeep Singh Hundal. He studied at Spring Dale Senior Secondary School in Amritsar from pre- nursery to grade 6 and then moved to Canada along with his parents who were determined to bring him up in a progressive, peaceful and developed society. Upon arriving in May 2008, he joined Falling Brooke Middle School in Mississauga Ontario, in grade 7. He completed his grade 8 at Mentor College, Mississauga, before moving to Halifax in 2009 when his mother joined Dalhousie University Faculty of Dentistry as a student in qualifying program. He joined Halifax Grammar School in 2009 in grade 9 and graduated in 2013. When his mother completed her degree at Dalhousie and wanted to go back to Ontario, Angad, like any teenager did not want to leave his friends and resisted the move back. He impressed upon his parents that Nova Scotia is a better place to live and was looking forward to studying at Dalhousie’s science program when on an unfortunate day in August of the same year; he lost his life in a solo motorbike accident.

Angad Hundal was a very polite, kind, caring and generous soul. He was a deep thinker, keen observer, analytical and constitutive in nature but modest who rarely expressed himself openly. He was a very loving son, a kind friend and a marvelous human being. He overcame and healed his loneliness in early years in Canada by comforting others in the same boat. He often expressed his disappointment on how our society is becoming more and more selfish, succumbing to greed and lust. He also expressed his concerns on how the moral, ethical and disciplined exterior is serving as a mask for self-serving favoritism underneath the surface.

We, Angad’s parents want to honor his memory by spending our remaining lives in Nova Scotia and establishing this award to recognize the young men who support the values so dear to Angad.
